The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued $140,000 in employee injury prevention penalties to a Georgia construction company following an investigation of the business' health and safety. OSHA began its inspection of Sunland Construction Corp. in August 2011 after an OSHA agent noticed the company did not offer employees a safe means of egress from a 5-foot-10-inch trench, failing to protect workers at a Georgia worksite.

OSHA cited the company for two willful violations, penalties committed with intentional knowledge or voluntary disregard for the law's requirements, for putting workers at risk of a trench collapse while replacing high-pressure gas lines. OSHA area director Andre Richards told Occupational Health & Safety the government agency does not tolerate workplace cave-in violations as they can happen instantly with fatal consequences.

Safety managers can use web-based workplace injury prevention software to manage the health and safety of an organization's employees. The online tools empower supervisors to examine their workplace environment as they evaluate their health and safety needs. The software gives managers the opportunity to implement web-based and desktop solutions to help prevent workplace injuries, reduce employees' injury-related costs and increase productivity across an organization.
