OSHA blasts cleanup firm for workplace safety violations
A South Carolina shooting range cleanup firm took a $480,000 bullet from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) following an inspection of injury prevention standards . OSHA issued the proposed fines to Welch Group Environmental LLP after discovering the South Carolina company failed to protect workers at a Florida shooting range from overexposure to lead.
Delray Shooting Center hired Welch Group Environmental to clean the shooting range and reclaim the lead. OSHA began its inspection in July 2011 as part of a national and regional program to combat lead. The government agency issued 11 willful violations with $462,000 in penalties against Welch Group Environmental. In addition, the South Carolina company received four allegedly serious violations relating to employee respiratory protection.
OSHA area director Darlene Fossum told Occupational Health & Safety that Welch Group Environmental was aware of OSHA's lead standards and the dangers associated with it but put employees' health at risk by allowing the hazards to exist.
