The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) issued citations against two California farm labor contractors following the investigation into an employee's heat-related workplace death in 2011. Cal/OSHA penalized C.Clunn Consulting and Ag Prime Corp. a total of $74,125 for employee injury prevention violations.

A C. Clunn Consulting employee collapsed in a cantaloupe field in Blythe, California on July 7, 2011. The worker died after being airlifted to a hospital in Phoenix after packaging cantaloupes, loading 40-pound boxes on a trailer and driving a tractor in 102-degree weather. Cal/OSHA found C. Clunn Consulting allegedly failed to enforce its heat illness prevention program and did not offer training to employees or managers about detecting or treating heat illness symptoms.

The California Department of Industrial Relations (CDIR) notes employers are required to provide training, water and shade to employees to prevent heat-related illness. CDIR Director Christine Baker told Occupational Health & Safety that employers must enforce injury prevention programs to keep workers and supervisors safe.
